What Size Rice Cooker Does 1 Person Actually Need?
I have tested small nice cookers like Toshiba Mini, Dash Mini, Aroma Housewares ARC-363, Tiger JBV-A10U and Zojirushi NS-LGC05XB. Most of these solo cooks only need 1 cup of uncooked rice per meal. After cooking, These rice yields about 2 full bowls of cooked rice. 2 full bowls cooked rice is more than enough for me as a single person.
A 1- to 3-cup (uncooked) mini rice cooker hits the sweet spot for solo cooking. Because it balances thermal dynamics, portion control. For these reason my mini rice cooker can heats up quickly. Also, I can clean the rice cooker in minutes Becuase the cooker is too small. My mini rice cookers take up minimal counter space in my kitchen. I prefer cook in 5-cup or larger pot if I have to do batch-cooking meals for the entire week or frequently host guests.

Dimensions and Counter Footprint
I cook in my small flat every day. My desk space is limited. Also, I eat rice a lot, but I need to cook other foods every day. So, I like to avoid big rice cookers because it takes up lots of space. I use the Dash Mini mostly, and it is tiny that suit my kitchen. The size is only six inches wide. I can fit it everywhere, even on my high shelf.
My Aroma ARC-363 is compact enough that it almost blends right in alongside a warm mug on my counter. The size is small, with roughly an 8-inch footprint. I feel that it is closer in size to an electric kettle.
My Toshiba Mini is nine inches wide. It is a little bigger than my Dash Mini and Aroma ARC-363. The cooker needs more room on my desk.
My Zojirushi NS-LGC05XB is long. That’s why I don’t like it for cooking for one person like me. Its long shape takes up my entire cutting board where I need to prepare food.
The Tiger JBV-A10U is also big. It needs a wide base because its wide body is too big for my tight counter. It is also too large a cooker, just like my Zojirushi NS-LGC05XB, which makes my cooking harder.
Weight and Daily Portability
Sometimes I move my pots everywhere. And sometimes I even cook outside. I need to lift them around because I like to tour a lot. The good news of using mini rice cookers is that I can lift them in my bag.
My Dash Mini is only two pounds. It is so light. I easily put it in my bag when I take long trips. I can comfortably move around on my journey by keeping it in my bag.
My Aroma ARC-363 weighs three pounds. It is only one pound heavier than the Dash Mini. I feel it is easy to move too.
My Tiger JBV-A10U is six pounds. I feel it is a little heavy. I do not carry my The Tiger JBV-A10U when I travel around.
My Toshiba Mini is seven pounds. It is also heavy and heavier than my Tiger JBV-A10U. I do not recommd it to carry it for tours, and I even do it by myself.
My Zojirushi NS-LGC05XB has a top grip. I feel it is easy and safe to lift. It weighs 6 pounds, which is carryable for touring. But I prefer not to carry it because the size is a little big.
Raw Cup Yields and Solo Serving Size
Actually, I eat rice mostly at night. I need one warm bowl of rice each night. A huge pot makes too much food, which I do not like.
My Dash Mini cooks one raw cup. That gives me two cups of cooked rice. It is just right for my dinner.
My Aroma ARC-363 makes three cooked cups, which is a little much for one person. For me, two cups of cooked rice is well enough to complete my dinner. But I can still make two cups of cooked rice using my Aroma ARC-363. I need to put 1 cup of uncooked rice in the rice cooker. But if you want to cook for two people, I think the Aroma ARC-363 is a great choice.
My Toshiba Mini cooks three raw cups. My Zojirushi NS-LGC05XB also cooks three raw cups. Both yield six warm bowls. I use them if I want to cook for my next meal as well. Sometimes, I feel too lazy to cook again and again, so I cook once for my two meals together. That saves me time.
My Tiger JBV-A10U cooks five raw cups. That makes eleven cups of rice. I do not use it much when I am alone at home. But sometimes I do because my Tiger JBV-A10U is great for making fluffy rice. I especially use it when my friends visit my home and all my family members gather together.

White Rice Cooking Speed
I want to see how fast my mini rice cookers cook. So, I timed my cookers on my desk. I need hot food fast. I do not like to wait for a long time. Waiting is very boring to me. After the cooking job is done by my rice cookers. I saw my Dash Mini cook white rice in 18 minutes. I have to tell you that it is the fastest rice cooker when it comes to cooking for 1-2 people.
My Aroma ARC-363 is also fast like the Dash Mini, but it takes slightly longer time around 20 minutes, for a fresh bowl.
But my Toshiba Mini is slow. It takes up to 42 minutes. Which is too much time for me. But if I am not in rush and I have much time to spend at home, I use my Toshiba Mini. Toshiba Mini is too good at making my rice very soft.
Brown Rice and Slow Grain Soaking Times
I wanted to see how well these rice cookers cook brown rice. I cook brown rice for my meals. My Zojirushi NS-LGC05 took 85 minutes to complete cooking. I love this cooker because it soaks each grain in warm water first. That makes the rice sweet and soft.
My Tiger JBV-A10U took 48 minutes to cook brown rice. This is faster than the Zojirushi NS-LGC05. But one thing I do not like is that the grains stay firm.
My Dash Mini cooker cooks brown rice in 32 minutes, but I do not recommend the Dash Mini for making brown rice. I saw my rice stay hard.
Quick Cook Modes and Breakfast Oats
Sometimes I eat rice in the morning before I leave home to go to the office. So, I want Fast modes to save my time.
I cook rice in my Toshiba Mini by using quick mode. The quick mode takes 30 minutes to complete my cooking job.

Smart Sensors and Computer Heat Control
I am always looking for a rice cooker with smart heat chips. It makes my rice taste great. The Zojirushi NS-LGC05 and Toshiba Mini use smart chips. They check the steam as the pot boils. If the pot gets too hot, the chip cuts the heat down fast.
Basic pots have no chips to fix the heat. Dash Mini and Aroma ARC 363 do not have smart heat chips. I am more careful when I cook rice using these basic rice cookers.
Keep-Warm Temperatures and Scorch Prevention
I hate hard-burnt rice at the bottom of a pot. The Dash Mini gets hot fast. That can crisp the bottom rice. I have had rice-crisping problems many times. This is the reason I do not like basic rice cookers.
The Tiger JBV-A10U and Zojirushi NS-LGC05 hold heat at a safe level. They keep rice warm for hours so it stays soft and fresh. This is the reason they are premium rice cookers. So, I prefer premium rice cookers over basic rice cookers because of temperature control.

My Personal Rice Cooking Experience
I used to cook rice in large pans on my stove. I was bad at it. Some days the grains came out hard as rocks. Other days they turned into mush. One night I burned a metal pan and threw it away. That day I said, I need a small rice cooker.
I bought the Dash Mini first. It was tiny and cute. It fit right by my mug. I put in half a cup of raw rice with water and pushed the switch down. In eighteen minutes, I had a hot bowl of rice. It is best for students and dorms. But skip it if you want brown rice, as it has no smart heat.
Next, I tried the Aroma ARC-363. It cost very little money. It made three cups of cooked rice. It had a clear glass lid so I could watch the food boil. It is best for low budgets and fast soup. But skip it if you want exact cook times, because it has no clock.
Then I bought the Toshiba Mini. This changed my daily meals. It has eight cook modes and an amber screen. I set the timer at night, and I woke up to hot oats at seven in the morning. It is ideal for busy folks who want smart heat at a fair price. But skip it if you need rice in ten minutes, since it cooks with slow care.

After that, I tested the Tiger JBV-A10U. I love its food tray. I put white rice at the bottom and put salmon and greens on top. Both cooked at the same time in thirty minutes. It is ideal for anyone who wants a full two in one dinner in one pot. But it is big, so skip it if your counter is tiny.
Finally, I got the Zojirushi NS-LGC05XB. It made the best rice I have ever tasted. Every grain was sweet, soft, and separate. It keeps rice warm for a full day without drying out. It is ideal for true rice lovers who want the highest quality. But it costs the most, so skip it if you are on a tight budget.
